NASA postpones work on Orion capsule and SLS mega-rocket following Coronavirus Pandemic

Jim Bridenstine, NASA chief, reported on Thursday, March 19, that the space agency is delaying production and testing of its Space Launch System (SLS), Orion crew capsule, and mega-rocket. Also, the deep space hardware built to ferry astronauts to the lunar surface and the Red Planet.

Jim stated that the momentary suspension, that takes effect on Friday, March 20, is a reaction to the Coronavirus spread and the disease it causes named, COVID-19. NASA elevates its Michoud Assembly Facility located in Louisiana and Stennis Space Center situated in Mississippi to Stage 4 of the agency’s “response framework” following the pandemic concerns.

At Stage 4, which is the highest point of the framework, a facility closes down, except for work needed to save life and severe infrastructure.

Bridenstine confirmed on a Thursday update that the change at Stennis came about due to the increasing number of COVID-19 cases in the society around the center, the figure of self-isolation cases inside their workforce, and one confirmed case among their Stennis group.
